Back from ACE – 1: Flexibility for quickly growing company

Posted on

I had a few weeks to think about everything we’ve been able to listen to at the Aras Community Event in Troy, Michigan. So all these reflexions allow me to get back to you  with some analysis. My first analysis in on the presentation from Insitu, inc ( a Boeing Company) it was definitely the presentation I liked the most and not only because this company is building drones (a market I really like as an Electronic Engineer and a former private pilot). No, if i liked it, it is mainly because the story is very interesting and reflects the difficulties to have a “bog-box” prebuilt software installed in a continiously growing company.

Do not over-specify

Specification in PLM is complicated, mainly during the first few phases of an implementation project. It has to provide enough information for the implementers to provide you with the right solution but it also needs to be easy to update, easy compare with future version. And that problem was expressed by insitu in the fact that for the first “big box” system they selected, it required to specify everything, but by the time they would have finished their specification, a lot of processes would have already been changed.

Get People trained

That’s one major thing we try to communicate to our leads or our very new customers. Get people trained on Aras! Usually when thinking about PLM, people think you can either trained to be a User or to be a developper. But with Aras, being a user is pretty easy, in most case we have one or two coaching session and then people understand the product. Users are not dumb, if you take a little time to explain them why the interface is this way, they will get it and you will take away all the very fancy UI enhancement they would have requested. The training we advice is the admin training. You won’t become an Aras Developper, you will become some who gets it, who understand the power of Aras. And Insitu made sure to have internal people trained in order to work with Aras consultant then.
